The Montessori Method of education was developed in Italy in the early 1900’s by Maria Montessori. The Montessori Philosophy embraces the whole child and their natural curiosity and love of learning. Children will reach their full potential both academically and socially when given the freedom to actively work with concrete, sequential material within a carefully prepared environment. The Montessori environment provides enough guidance to help children work towards independence and self discipline. When placed in a proper environment, children will “normalize” which means that their self-education will lead them to develop into mature members of society, always bringing with them their ardent love of learning. We at Ridgewood Montessori School take great pride in implementing Dr. Montessori’s teaching in creating classrooms that are multi-aged. Each of our programs are designed to address the developmental needs of children to help them develop at their own pace, providing prepared material and exercises which challenges them and are appropriate to both age and skill levels.

 

In early childhood, Montessori students learn through sensory motor activities, working with materials that develop their cognitive powers through direct experience: seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling, touching, and movement.

 

In the Elementary years, the child continues to organize his thinking through work with the Montessori material and an interdisciplinary curriculum, as he passes from the concrete to the abstract. He begins the application of his knowledge to real-world experiences. Students learn to think critically, work collaboratively and embrace their love for learning.
